IMMORTAL GAME OF TAL vs. HECHT

Chess PersonalitiesOpeningAnalysisChessOver the board
Every single player is familiar with the aggressive playing style of Tal, and in Today's game we are gonna look at one of the most catastrophic one's....

TAL - HACHT
Verna Olympiad - 1962
Queen's Indian Defense

During that time, opening were quite different and unique in their own style. If you consider modern opening like London System, Queen's Gambit, Dutch Defense, e4-e5, queen's pawn opening, Spanish, Italian, and million more, does serve a purpose of providing an interesting game. But, in 20th century people went for more positional opening on steroids like Queen's Indian Defense, King's Indian Attack with spicy lines.
This game also falls under that category but, no spicy lines, it's just played by " Tal "! :

1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 e6
3. Nf3 b6

The game is a standard Queen's defense, as you can see. Here, Black is preparing to pin the queen's knight with his bishop similar to Nimzo-Indian Positions:

4. Nc3 Bb4
5. Bg5

Developing the dark squared bishop before playing " e3 ":

5. ... Bb7
6. e3 h6
7. Bh4 Bxc3+
8. bxc3 d6
9. Nd2 e5
10. f3 Qe7
11. e4 Nbd7
Here, White has a space advantage on the queen side, he would have like a even scary control by playing for a4:
12. Bd3 Nf8 ( White is +0.4 in this position and should continue with maneuvering the pieces, but, decides to 'GO IN' )
13. c5 dxc5
14. dxe5 Qxe5
15. Qa4+

Here, is where engine gives up on white and prefers black with an advantage of - 0.7, Truth to be said looks like black had attained more than equality! Rather the engine changes the more order a little bit and gives the line - (14. Qa4 +Qd7 15.Qxd7+ N6xd7 16.d5 Ng6 17.Bg3) - But, do you really think Tal would go for a queen trade this early?

15. ... c6
16. O-O Ng6
17. Nc4 Qe6
18. e5 b5

YES! It is a fork but, Tal is no 500 rated, He knows what to do!

19. exf6
YES! He hung his queen, and why wouldn't he! Here, is what happens if you take it -
19. ... bxa4
20. fxg7 Rg8 (Engine Evaluation +1.4)
21. Bf5 (Now, Down to +0.3, But, still high) Nxh4

Now, black hung his queen, 'WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON',
Here is what happens if you take it -
22. Bxe6 Ba6
23. Nd6+

White's bishop and Rook on f1 both are hanging in this position but, black is in check
23. ... Ke7

Now, Bishop, Knight and Rook all are just hanging!!
24. Bc4 Rxg7 (White is +0.4)

And black just took a pawn??
Here's, Why-
24. ... Bxc4 25.Nxc4 (White is +0.8)
24. ...Kxd6 25.Bxa6 (White is +0.7)
So, it's just simple math, better to take just a pawn!
25. g3 Kxd6
26. Bxa6 Nf5
27. Rab1 f6

A big mistake by Black, playing very passively is such positions can cost you the whole game. Apparently engines to love the move 27. ... Nf3
28. Rfd1+ Ke6 (Engine gives +2.7)
29. Re1+ Kd6
30. Kf2 c4
31. g4 Ne7
32. Rb7

Here, engine likes to grab the loose pawn on c4, but, Tal goes for full-on pressure with the rook and lost a significant advantage.
32. ... Rag8 (evaluation 0.6)
33. Bxc4 Nd5
34. Bxd5 cxd5
35. Rb4 Rc8
36. Rxa4 Rxc3 37. Ra6+ Kc5
38. Rxf6 h5 39. h3 hxg4 40. hxg4 Rh7

Again, a huge mistake by black to sidestep his rook on the H-file, engines quickly realizes the issue and gives an eval of +3.5, Now the game is resign able for black as he is playing with Tal. But, he continues -
41. g5 Rh5
42. Rf5 Rc2+ 43. Kg3 Kc4
44. Ree5 d4 (Doubling on the 5th rank and putting more pressure!)45. g6 Rh1
46. Rc5+ Kd3
47. Rxc2 Kxc2
48. Kf4 Rg1 (Then, come's the final blunder | Rh8 was preferred)
49. Rg5 (evaluation +53.9)
Black Resigns (1-0)

The most important thing to learn form this game is to not to panic when your opponent is making very aggressive looking moves and it is making your palms sweaty, just give your best and hope for the best. From the perspective of an aggressive player he could just be playing hope chess and using psychological tricks on you. It is very common in quick time control - Bullet and Blitz.

Never let it degrade the quality of your moves.

With Regards,
Have a wonderful Day
