Chess is a very costly sport if you decide to pursue it professionally. Many people think chess only requires a board and pieces, but the reality is completely different.

Professional chess involves huge expenses over a long period of time. These include:

• Coaching fees
• Tournament entry fees
• Domestic and international travel
• Food and accommodation
• Chess books and software
• Training camps
• FIDE-rated tournaments

All these expenses continue for many years.
Becoming an IM or GM is not a short journey.
It is a long-term investment, and there are no guarantees of success.

If your family is financially strong, then managing these expenses becomes much easier.
If not, then at least you should have sponsorship or some form of financial support.

If you are not financially strong and do not have any sponsorship, then you should seriously think before choosing chess as a professional career.
Many people may not like hearing this, but this is the reality.

It is better to enjoy chess as a hobby than to enter professional chess without understanding the financial burden. There is absolutely nothing wrong with playing chess as a hobby.

However, if you choose chess as a career without financial support, then be mentally prepared for a very difficult journey.

Many talented players stop playing—not because they lack talent, but because they simply cannot afford the journey anymore.
Talent alone is not enough if opportunities are constantly limited by financial problems.

That is the harsh reality of professional chess.
