An update on ChessCam, the free app to digitize your chess games

Hello everyone.

I am back with another update for ChessCam, the free app to digitize your chess games from a video or live stream.

Forget scoresheets, you can upload a clip of your blitz game and have it transcribed to a PGN in minutes.

To see it in action check out the following video.

Giving it a try

  1. Recording
    • Record a static video of your chess game, where all 4 corners are visible.
    • It is easiest to use your phone with a cheap stand.
    • If you have 0.5x zoom, use it so that you can place the tripod closer to the board.
    • The best angle is from the side.
  2. Uploading
    • Upload your video.
    • If the corner detection is not perfect, set the corners manually.
  3. Exporting
    • Once the video has finished processing, click "Copy PGN" to save the game to your clipboard.
    • If you want you can go to Export to view the game & export it to a Lichess study.

WARNING - There is a bug in some of the latest versions of Chrome/Edge that break ChessCam. If using Chrome make sure your version is at least 128.0.6613.114.

Updates

For those of you who have heard about ChessCam before, these are the latest updates:

  • Improved FPS on mid-end devices (from 4 FPS to 6 FPS on the Google Pixel 7A)
  • Enhanced tracking accuracy
  • New live display of the game on a 2D board

Moving Forward

Let's work together to break DGTs monopoly on digital boards, and move towards a future where chess transcription is available to everyone free of charge.
