Exciting beginning to school year for Detroit Chess players going into Metro League!

Celebrating victory at the regular Friday practice session at Detroit Institute of Arts with Chess themed Cake, white and dark chocolate pieces. Detroit City Chess Club President and proud Mother Catherine Martinez!

The day started early November 2, 2024, at 6 am with over 150 children and their coaches piling into 3 buses at Bunche Preparatory Academy to travel to Michigan Capital's Lansing Center for the Club Championship. Unlike most team tournaments, where students play for their school, in the club championship, we compete collectively for Detroit, all Detroit schools as one. This year was the largest ever, with over 450 students from all over Michigan, over a third playing for Detroit.
An exciting opportunity ahead of Metro League, where all the Detroit schools play each other, a Round Robin for each Elementary, Middle, and High School. Metro League is extremely competitive with almost 50 Detroit Schools competing for funding to travel to Nationals (this year Super Nationals is in Florida), as Detroit Public Schools funds the top 3 schools in each division's travel expenses.
Although Detroit is always competitive, the last few years were won by Brian Wilson's Implodium Chess Team. For many of the newer students, this was their first tournament, giving encouragement, team building, and a chance to test their skills against a diverse set of players from across the state and provide incentives to work hard in the future.
