TriState Triumph

StrategyTacticsChessOver the boardLichess
This game is from TriState Championship that I played. The TriState Championship events are held at NYC, and I was a student then living in CT. Since I was a student and I didn’t have a car, I had to start very early from Connecticut so as to reach New York and play in time for the tournament. And this travel my friends, was not just a straight one. I had to take at least a couple of transfers on my way to the tournament venue in New York. This means that on Sunday mornings, IMAGINE SUNDAY MORNINGS!! I used to start at 6am in the morning giving up my sleep (Trust me I love sleeping and who doesn’t?) and travel all the way from West Haven in CT to NYC starting with an iced coffee for my breakfast. But later on when I played the matches, won even one game I used to feel all satisfied and happy. I mean all that struggle of me waking up and travelling all the way and finally when I win was all worth the euphoria!

Now in this game, you would see that I was down by a couple of pawns, I tried and then later on ended giving my opponent a fork. I am not going to mention which fork although. To find out which fork, keep reading the game.

White: Praneetha Kuppili (1305)

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bc4 Nc6 4. c3 Bg4 5. d3 Nf6 6. Bg5 e6 7. Nbd2 Ne5 8. Qa4 Nc6
9. Bb5 Qc7 10. d4 Bxf3 11. Bxf6 Bxg2!?
Bxg2 is a very interesting move. I mean it is a good start for an exchange and not the regular conventional way. Instead of going for a piece, Aaron started with an exchange for pawn. This is my first pawn down in the game.

12. Rg1 gxf6 13. Rxg2 cxd4 14. cxd4 Kd8
14. ... Kd8 seems to be a saver move because of the pinned Knight on c6.
15. d5 exd5 16. exd5; Adding more pressure on the Pinned Knight which follows with the moves dxc6 bxc6 and Bxc6 +-.
15. Rc1 Rc8 16. d5 exd5 17/ exd5 Qe7 18. Kd1 Ne5 19. Rxc8 Kxc8 20. Qxa7 Ng6 21. Rg3 Qe5
21. Rg3 aiming for 22. RC3 Kd8 23. Qa8#

22. Qa8 Kc7
There were two variations that I could have probably played and yet won the game.
22. Rc3 Kd8 23. Qa8 Ke7 24. Rc7#
22. Rc3 Qxc3 23. bXc3 +-
23. Rc3 Kb6 24. Nc4
24.Nc4 is the Fork I was talking about. I could finally fork the King and the Queen. And after this move of mine Black resigned.
Result: 1-0
