Game of the Week XVIII- So,Wesley (2766) - Mamedyarov,Shakhriyar (2770)

ChessAnalysisOpeningOver the boardTournament
A ruined pawn structure around the king is a recipe for getting mated in the middle game.

However, closer to the endgame, the chance of the weaker side being able to defend the king increases, which is why they usually offer trades to make the position more defensible.

Nonetheless, sometimes the attacking side may also initiate trades in order to gain a favorable tandem (i.e. opposite-color bishop and queen, etc.) in the endgame and keep the attack going.

Defending the king against an opposite-color bishop and queen is difficult because the bishops never cross paths, and therefore, they are not direct opponents in that sense. Meanwhile, the stronger side keeps attacking the pawns or squares that could not be defended by the bishop, and the queen as the only defender might not be enough to salvage the position. This leads us to the Game of the Week...
