Chess
The talented Waldemar Swart is selected to play in two prestigious South African Junior Tournaments

Waldemar Swart, a 7-year-old learner from Jeffreys Bay Primary, is set to represent the Eastern Province and Sarah Baartman District at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship in Benoni, as well as the Inter-Provincials in Rustenburg.

From the tender age of 6, Waldemar showed an interest in board games and began playing chess for fun. It quickly became apparent that he had an exceptional talent for the game. Under the guidance of Beryl Christodoulou, Waldemar began to flourish as a chess player.

His first notable achievement came in 2023 when he clinched victory in his division of the annual Kouga Mayoral Cup Tournament. In the same year, Waldemar was selected for the Sarah Baartman District Team and the Eastern Province Under Eight team. Moreover, he was recognised as the best junior player at Jeffreys Bay Primary School.

To date, Waldemar has amassed five gold medals, three silver medals, and one bronze medal in tournaments.

Recently, Waldemar joined the Aston Bay Chess Club, becoming the club's youngest member. He demonstrated his talent by defeating some of the club's strongest members in several games.
Two of the club's top players have volunteered to help Waldemar prepare for the upcoming tournaments. The Aston Bay Chess Club believes that Waldemar's talent for the game should be nurtured and supported as much as possible. The development of chess, particularly opportunities for junior players, will be a key focus for the Aston Bay Chess Club.

We are immensely proud and delighted to inform you that Waldemar has been selected to participate in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship, hosted by Gauteng Province Chess. This is a significant milestone in Waldemar's chess career, having achieved this level of excellence at such a young age.

The SAJCCC (South African Junior Closed Chess Championship) event is highly prestigious, with highly rated players participating. This allows players to obtain high ratings and be considered among the best in South Africa. You can view Waldemar's profile on the Chess SA website.

The SAJCCC 2024 will take place from the 27th of April to the 1st of May 2024 in Benoni, and the Inter-Provincials from the 2nd to the 5th of May 2024 in Rustenburg.

As of the 14th of April 2024, Waldemar's ratings stand at 1411 for Classic Chess, achieved over 66 games (46 wins, 3 draws, and 17 losses). His Rapid rating of 1287 was achieved over 5 games (2 wins and 3 losses).

We wish Waldemar all the best in the upcoming tournaments.
