Fun and Aggressive Kingscrushing systems against those pesky Caro-Kann players

Dangerous weapons vs the Caro-Kann you may not have tried before

Are you fed up playing against the seemingly rock solid Caro-Kann defence? The Caro-Kann was understandably a favourite of Anatoly Karpov who's style of play kind of modelled Tigran Petrosian but instead of playing for a draw like Petrosian instead played for a win. So the end result was a fairly riskless and relentless winning machine who proved to the world he was a worth World champion when Fischer was defaulted thus auto-crowning Karpov as the new King of chess.

So how do we crack this solid defence? Well in order to improve my own clarification on this particular subject, I did a course analysing short and sweet wins against the Caro-Kann and after weeks and months of that research, three interesting weapons emerged which I had not taken seriously before. Here is a little taster of those:

Dangerous Weapon #1 - The Goldman Variation

Example game - the young John Nunn was still pretty dangerous and was later to become a strong Grandmaster and leading opening theoretician. He felt this was an interesting variation and it does indeed have interesting resources behind it.

Dangerous Weapon #2 - The Fantasy Variation

This variation isn't advisable against the French defence because of dxe4 and Qh4+ - but against the Caro-Kann this seemingly daft weakening move carries behind it a very dangerous gambit idea indeed which has caught many victims!

Dangerous Weapon #3 - The Von Hennig Gambit

I love the idea of an f3 gambit but you need to watch out for an early e5 strike. Bc4 is a nice waiting move to make sure e5 from Black isn't effective. Another waiting move I have played is Bg5 and then f3 later. Both are pretty dangerous tools of choice.

Key Takeaway points

  • Dangerous unusual weapons can cause opponents to improvise badly!
  • Take the opponent out of their preparation can be great in the current "memorisation" chess culture
  • The gambits and initiative offered by two of the above are going to be more effective the faster the time limit but they did have their victims on a long time control too so they can't be that bad!

I quite enjoyed looking at many game examples in the above rare and interesting weapons against the Caro-Kann and many others in my "Chess Openings: Beating the Caro-Kann with Tricks and Traps" course which can be found on my courses page:
