World Championship 2021 Game 11

Hi all

Here is my analysis video for Game 11 based on the analysis in the Study

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV0iMZW9GY

The Italian game is chosen (Bc4 as opposed to Bb5 - the "Spanish Game" or Ruy Lopez)

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#5

A quiet approach with c3

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#9

Magnus doesn't mind weakening b5

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#12

A slightly extravagant way of exchanging off dark squared bishops

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#19

Black has prospects of playing for d5 to help liberate position

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#26

Reminiscent of Fischer plans in Ruy Lopez with Ng4

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#35

Behold! The d5 break - Black seems fully equalised now

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#38

BLUNDER ALERT! - An itch which was over-scratched!

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#45

A powerful "Exchange sacrifice" which guarantees black a huge advantage

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#46

Inaccuracy alert! Nf5 played instead of exf2+ and Rd6 which seemed absolutely crushing! - See analysis

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#52

The Endgame transition to a rook and pawn ending seems miserable for White

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#59

Final position

https://lichess.org/study/ClDHBR0w/8AqyM6hj#98

Takeaway points

  • White didn't seem to get anything out of the opening
  • The rook on f4 caused irritation and invoked the g3 blunder
  • The exchange sacrifice Magnus played seemed absolutely crushing
  • Magnus may have been able to make the game more concise with exf2 and Rd6 but the expression goes "A win is a win"
  • Magnus Carlsen is now 4 points ahead
