The Italian game is chosen (Bc4 as opposed to Bb5 - the "Spanish Game" or Ruy Lopez)

A quiet approach with c3

Magnus doesn't mind weakening b5

A slightly extravagant way of exchanging off dark squared bishops

Black has prospects of playing for d5 to help liberate position

Reminiscent of Fischer plans in Ruy Lopez with Ng4

Behold! The d5 break - Black seems fully equalised now

BLUNDER ALERT! - An itch which was over-scratched!

A powerful "Exchange sacrifice" which guarantees black a huge advantage

Inaccuracy alert! Nf5 played instead of exf2+ and Rd6 which seemed absolutely crushing! - See analysis

The Endgame transition to a rook and pawn ending seems miserable for White

Takeaway points

• White didn't seem to get anything out of the opening
• The rook on f4 caused irritation and invoked the g3 blunder
• The exchange sacrifice Magnus played seemed absolutely crushing
• Magnus may have been able to make the game more concise with exf2 and Rd6 but the expression goes "A win is a win"
• Magnus Carlsen is now 4 points ahead
