Meet Princess Chess: My Own Obnoxiously Difficult Chess Variant

Chess variantChessAnalysisLichess
Albert Einstein didn't wake up one day and say "I'm going to create an equation that will change the world". Shakespeare didn't choose to write a play that will become an eternal cultural phenomenon. And I didn't try to make an awful chess variation. But I did.

I'm on Lichess late at night, trying to go to sleep. I notice a shiny new button I've never pressed before. "Board editor". I realized that I can now play chess and choose starting positions, what pieces, and how many. I had been gifted a great power. Voltaire once said that "with great power comes great responsibility". So I took that power and abused it. I created a crime against chessmen: Princess Chess. (has nothing to do with the fairy piece)

The basics of Princess Chess

This is the setup to play Princess Chess. The rules of this variant are simple. No fairy pieces and no special rules. So how is it different from classical chess? Obviously, each side has one king and only two queens. This changes the strategy and gameplay dramatically. You no longer have to worry about things like placing pawns or castling. The goal is clear as a crystal: take out your opponent's queens so you can secure a checkmate, unthreatened.

The cardinal rule of Princess Chess is this: If your queen is in a position where it can capture another queen, your queen is also in danger of being captured.

King And Queen's Checkmate

Here, Black (me) lost one of her queens on turn 9. However, beginning on turn 22, she starts to push White's king in a position where he is getting closer to the edge of the chessboard. The different places the King can move to becomes extremely limited when he is cornered. The endgame also reminds you that the King can also be used to checkmate.

Black Mates In 6

I'm Black again in this sample game. Immediately the first thing she does is try to attack one of White's queens. In turn 2, White moves his queen to d4. This is a risky move for both parties, as three of the four queens in play can be captured in one move. Black chooses to capture the diagonal queen, also putting the White king in check. Obviously, White is Stockfish here, so he doesn't always make optional moves. The best move for White right now is to capture the queen on d4. But Stockfish will be Stockfish, so he moves his king out of check, but sacrifices his queen. With no more queens, it is now nigh-impossible for White to win, because he will always be followed by queens with nothing to defend him. This shows that the core of Princess Chess relies on getting rid of the Queens before your opponent does the same to you.

White Plays Safely

I'm White for this example. If you look at the beginning of the game, you'll notice she is doing her best to not put her queen in a position where it can be captured. Not only does it prevent capture, but White's second move also puts the Black king in check! Black has two choices here. He can move the king up or down (which will inevitably lead to a loss, because a White queen will follow him), or he can sacrifice his queen to defend his king. Even though he lost in the end, the sacrifice enabled him to survive longer than he would have had he just moved the king.

Level 8 Stockfish Beats Me At My Own Game (In 4 Turns!)

For this last game, I'm White. I start by moving my right queen to c1, to protect it from any of Black's attempts to capture. Blunder-rama! I did not realize that the Black queen on c7 puts my king in check. There aren't any positions where I can capture a Black queen, so the King tries to escape. Unfortunately, the queens chase me everywhere, and that's it for me.

What do you think of my late-night chess creation? Have you ever tried it, or will you? Have you come up with any good tactics or strategies?
