A new month, a new battle

The dust has barely settled on August’s fireworks, but the 64SQRS Online Team Battle Series marches on. Last month, Hummingbird’s Avante‐Garde captured the crown after a dramatic Blitz finale, UF Team Brutal proved their mettle by taking both the Freestyle arena and the runner‐up spot, and Gmdalods‐16 earned Player‐of‐the‐Month honours. Now, like gladiators emerging from the tunnel, our teams prepare for the September Edition.

The rules are unchanged: each month features three Saturday arenas – Bullet, Freestyle (Chess960) and Blitz– with points across all events deciding the monthly champion. But September brings a twist: the first ten teams to submit a complete line‐up at least one day before the Bullet and Freestyle events play for free. No entry fee for those arenas if you act fast. That’s right: if your squad is ready by midnight on September 12 for Bullet or September 19 for Freestyle, the ₦5 000 fee is waived. There’s no free pass for Blitz, but the larger pot makes it worth the climb.

As always, arenas start at 8 PM WAT. Teams that play all three events are eligible for the monthly prizes (₦40 000 for first, ₦15 000 for second, ₦12 000 for top player). With free entry available in Bullet and Freestyle, there’s no excuse not to throw your helmet into the arena.

Bullet Arena – storm of speed (Sept 13)

The opening arena is pure chaos: 1 + 0 with berserk enabled. Expect hundreds of games and thousands of moves – last month we saw 759 games and 60 538 moves in Bullethttps://sdmntprsouthcentralus.oaiusercontent.com/files/00000000-3120-61f7-8026-a89ec34ec747/raw?se=2025-09-10T17%3A18%3A55Z&sp=r&sv=2024-08-04&sr=b&scid=ea9ed07c-4c3b-562c-843d-4b747a292144&skoid=9ccea605-1409-4478-82eb-9c83b25dc1b0&sktid=a48cca56-e6da-484e-a814-9c849652bcb3&skt=2025-09-09T19%3A15%3A10Z&ske=2025-09-10T19%3A15%3A10Z&sks=b&skv=2024-08-04&sig=u%2BIE6971JBISIQk3GGdKi0bylP0lVAtkBbHD0Q2Mc%2Bw%3Dlichess.org. Thruy Assassins will try to repeat their August redemption win, while Hummingbird’s hope to start strong and UF Team Brutal aim to show their speed isn’t just for Freestyle. Newcomers can make a name for themselves here without paying a kobo if they register early.
What to watch for:

  • Berserk battles: Will kereshady keep up his lightning‐fast style? Can a dark horse like Square Hustler’s replicate their Blitz heroics?
  • Early upsets: A rapid run of wins can catapult an underdog into the lead; a single mis‐click can cost a title.
  • Chat room memes: Expect lightning emojis and manic laughter on TwitterSpaces as clocks hit zero and kings get flagged.

Freestyle / Chess960 – creative chaos (Sept 20)

A week later, the board gets scrambled. Pieces start on random squares, theory evaporates and instinct takes over. Last month’s Freestyle saw UF Team Brutal take the top spot with 267 points, followed closely by Hummingbird’s and Peelers. But anything can happen when rooks start next to knights and bishops are trapped behind pawns.
Why you should tune in:

  • Random openings: GMs and newcomers alike must think from move one. Watch for creative sacrifices and under‐promotion tricks.
  • Free entry: If you’re one of the first ten teams to submit a complete roster by Friday 19 September, you’ll play for free. Tag your friends now.
  • Artistry & hustle: Freestyle rewards imagination – exactly what the 64SQRS community loves.

Blitz Finale – fire and fury (Sept 27)

The month closes with 3 + 0 Blitz – the first tie‐break for the leaderboard and often the decider. August’s Blitz produced 532 games, 570 berserk attempts and an average rating of 2 208lichess.org. Hummingbird’s Avante‐Garde won with 268 points while UF Team Brutal and Square Hustler’s took the podiumlichess.org. This time, the storylines are juicy:

  • Hummingbird’s want back‐to‐back monthly titles. Can Gmdalods‐16 repeat his 279‐point masterpiece?
  • UF Team Brutal are hungry for revenge. With NigerianFlash and kereshady, they have the firepower.
  • Underdogs rising: Peelers, Thruy Assassins, Army of Fire and Square Hustler’s all have Blitz specialists. One heroic run could rewrite the script.
  • Prize stakes: Blitz offers a bigger pot (₦10 000 per team) and pays the top three, so expect full‐throttle play.

Call to teams & players

This is the start of the OTBS team league in Africa. Whether you’re a seasoned squad or a new club from your local university, there’s a place for you here. To register:

  1. Create a Lichess team and appoint a captain.
  2. Build a roster of five players and up to two substitutes. Balance your lineup across rating bands (Elite, Advanced, Intermediate).
  3. Submit your list to the organisers via the 64SQRS WhatsApp group or DM @64SQRS – by 12 Sept (Bullet) and 19 Sept (Freestyle) if you want free entry.
  4. Pay your fees (after the first 10 free slots fill up). The pot funds prizes; your entry invests in the community’s growth.

Remember: only teams that play all three arenas are eligible for the monthly prizes and leaderboard. Registration is capped, so act fast.

Why it matters

OTBS is more than a tournament; it’s a movement. We celebrate the fun, suspense‐filled and exciting side of chesslichess.org. Our August recap showed how underdogs can rise, how trash‐talk fuels rivalry, and how players come together to honour legends. September will be no different: new stories will unfold, new heroes will emerge, and the community will grow. By waiving fees for early registrants, we’re opening the door wider – so more schools, cities and clubs can join the party.
We can’t wait to see you in the arena. Join the TwitterSpaces, drop your predictions in the comments, and let’s make September a month to remember.
For the love of chess,
