My first puzzle
Not bad for a first tryInstructors say it can often be a helpful exercise to create your own puzzles. The idea is that you can learn something about tactics by approaching it backwards, starting with the solution and creating the problem around it, thereby becoming familiar with situations where tactics are possible. About a year ago I decided to give it a try and after about 20 minutes managed to come up with something I'm fairly proud of:
White to move and mate in two:
Over the following few weeks and months I occasionally tried again, and while I created a few puzzles I never made any that I found as interesting or challenging as the first one. Mostly they were too simple and looked like the easy tactics exercises I worked on every day. Maybe someday I'll devote more time to it and can come up with something better.
If you'd like to try it, the puzzle should have only one correct solution. The harder it is to solve, the better.
