Road to 1500 OTB

Over the boardTournamentStrategyTacticsEndgame
Welcome to my blog! This is where I document my road to 1500 rated OTB!!

My Road to 1500 OTB (Still in Progress)
For me, 1500 OTB represents a huge milestone. It’s the point where you’re no longer just surviving games — you’re starting to understand them.
I’m currently sitting around 1200 OTB, and this post is about what I’ve learned so far and how I’m trying to bridge the gap.
1. 1200 Is Where Bad Habits Get Exposed
At lower ratings, you can get away with a lot. At 1200, you can’t anymore.
Simple things like:

  • Leaving pieces hanging
  • Ignoring opponent threats
  • Playing hope chess

get punished more often. Most of my losses aren’t from being outplayed strategically — they’re from mistakes I knew better than to make.
That realization changed my approach.
2. My Biggest Focus: Fewer Blunders
I’m not trying to play like a master yet. My main goal is to lose fewer games to myself.
Before every move I now ask:

  • Is any piece hanging?
  • What is my opponent attacking?
  • If I play this, what can they do next?

Just slowing down has already improved my results.
3. Building Simple, Repeatable Openings
Instead of memorizing deep theory, I’m sticking to a few openings that give me familiar positions:

  • Solid development
  • Clear plans
  • Minimal early chaos

Knowing the ideas matters more than knowing exact moves.
4. Learning Endgames Earlier Than Most
I used to skip endgames. Now I study:

  • King and pawn endgames
  • Rook activity
  • Basic conversion technique

Even a small edge in endgames feels huge at this level.
5. Treating Losses as Data
After each game I try to answer:

  • Where did the position start going wrong?
  • Was it tactical, positional, or time trouble?
  • What pattern keeps repeating?

Every loss becomes a note for future games.
My Goal
1500 isn’t something I expect overnight. It’s a long-term target built from hundreds of small improvements.
Right now I’m focused on becoming a more disciplined, patient, and consistent player.
This blog will track that journey.
One clean move at a time.
