Learn from the classics

Chess
"Contrary to many young Colleagues, I do believe that it makes sense to study the Classics." -- Magnus Carlsen

While doing my daily puzzles I was reminded by this quote of Magnus Carlsen.

Reading in a book by GM Jonathan Rowson a game from 1993 by GM Rozentalis is shown where Rozentalis comes up with a splendid idea. Playing Qa3 and have doubled a pawns to get the semi open b file. And Rozentalis went on to win a brilliant game.

Afterwards Rozentalis said that the idea was inspired by a game by former world champion GM Smyslov, who played Qh4 and have doubled h pawns but proceed with an active rook and bishop in the center (Versus Reshevsky in 1948).

While doing puzzles from the Woodpecker method I was reminded of this game Alekhine - Colle (1925), where white sacrifices a queen on d7 :

Fast forward in time (1985), compare this with this game where Kasparov sacrifices the queen on d7 versus Karpov :

If that is not enough, compare the Opera game by Paul Morphy (1858) :

With Seirawan - Timman, 1990 :

Trivia :

The opponent of Rozentalis, Ralf Appel got his revanche years later, also in a Bundesliga game, and then went on and became GM two years later.

The quick loss of Karpov is mentioned in a book by IM Mark Dvoretsky. Karpov had some business issues which leaked into the media, and got angry phone calls that morning of the day that game was played.
Of course it was not easy to keep in balance during the game and he played weakly, Karpov said.

The comparison with the Morphy game was made by GM Seirawan himself in one of his videos.
