"The courage to be disliked" book and chess - Part 4
Youth is importantIf you check summaries and notes of the book The courage to be disliked you will unlikely find some that write "Youth is important" [1]. However, I would like to empathize on this in this post, because this is what I read between the lines in the book. I also find this important to express especially in the current difficult times with various crisis (like climate crisis) and the huge and sometimes negative impact of social media on youth.
First of all : Alfred Adler's ideas are said to be very difficult to grasp and implement. It is said that if you want to fully apply Adler's ideas into your life you would need half of the life time you lived already. So, a 70 year old would need 35 years to do so, but a 18 year young person would only need 9 years to fully apply Adler's ideas into their lives.
Second of all : In the book you can see the old philosopher and the young student. The more you read, the more you will see respect and patience from the old for the young. And then there is a small surprise at one point. The young student doesn't shy away from bold statements and trying to verbally knock down what the old philosopher talks about, but then, to the astonishment of the young student, the philosopher calls the young student a real friend, and also explains why.
Third of all : Adler's ideas are connected to giving the young a proper place within families and communities.
And if I think this over, it would be fair to say that more often than not, lots of adults tend to think that they know it all, and think that the young do know little and still have to learn and "copy" and "apply" "traditional" adult behavior. However, it made me think of a friend who told me once that after becoming mother she "re-discovered the world" because of her child's questions. I think that is a beautiful thing. We can learn so much from children, if we just listen carefully and take them serious, and be not too quick with our "rusty" ideas that have accumulated in our, perhaps, not so flexible mind.
Summary : Youth is important. They are the future, and a vital part of our community. We should make an effort to build horizontal relationships and communicate well with them.
And that includes of course within chess games, a chess server like Lichess, and the growing amount of young chess players.
To end with a quote :
Adlerian theory and practice have proven especially productive as applied to the growth and development of children. Adlerians believe that “a misbehaving child is a discouraged child” and that helping children to feel valued, significant, and competent is often the most effective strategy in coping with difficult child behaviors.

[1] Found one exception of a summary, that does show something about young people :
