Shift in focus
Changing my approach to playing and studying.Internet chess. Marvelous. Now I can play as much as I want and even be paired with a similar strength opponent, but recently it has not been as fun as I was losing so much. I was studying a little and even had been studying openings from Chessable which was using a lot of my concentration time during the day.
I was playing e4 for White going for the Ruy Lopez or the Italian after I had tried the Scotch gambit. For Black mostly e5, but sometimes French and the Sicilian then going for the Nimzo Indian or the QID. I know, too ambitious. I needed to focus. I was not even able to study my games properly. I just a lot of times clicked: "Request computer analysis". Which is great, but as an improving player 1500 - 1600, I was not relying as much on my own analysis. And, I have a ton of chess books lying around waiting to be read.
I had to make a change. Stop studying too many openings. Cut down on my White repertoire by:
> No e4 (a lot of prep involved)
> Playing Colle vs d5
> Playing some kind of d4-c4 or Catalan system against 1...Nf6
> e5 exclusively as Black (Studying only full games and not opening manuals to get a feel of the middlegame and endgame
> vs d4 = King's Indian Defense or Nimzo-QID
I also use the database to look up player games.
Now I am free. Now I have time to concentrate and train using tactics trainers and Artur Yusupov's "Build Up Your Chess" series of books.
And go through more annotated games.
Then just play chess, not memorize everything.... Well, maybe a bit.
