Why you probably suck at King of the Hill
The one essential thing that will make you better at KOTHThroughout my 111 games in King of the Hill so far (I know, I'm so experienced), I've played players ranging from top 50 players to decent players to complete headless chickens. Here is one consistent trend I've noticed that separates the worst from the rest in King of the Hill.
Bongclouding
The #1 mistake I see many beginners make in King of the Hill is immediately rushing their king toward their center. Usually, games against them begin something like this:
When you push your king out this early, you expose yourself to checkmating attacks, and your push towards the center is largely unsupported by your pawns and pieces. This often leads to a quick and devastating loss at the hands of a more experienced player.
Instead, what you should try to do is push for the center—not with your king, but with your pawns and pieces. You should try to follow basic opening rules somebody in the chess world should've taught you (if nobody ever did, don't bother learning variants and improve your normal game first). Basic rules, such as piece development and prioritizing central control, are essential in KOTH. Here's one of my sample games where I follow these basic rules.
I know this post was quite brief, but hope you found it helpful!
