Proposal: A Roadmap/Progression System for Beating BOTs
A Feature Proposal for LichessI’d like to propose a progression system built around defeating Lichess BOT accounts, ranked according to their ratings. The idea is to give players a structured roadmap of challenges, making training against BOTs more engaging and goal oriented.
This system could incorporate multiple dimensions of difficulty, such as:
- Defeating BOTs across specific openings
- Winning within a set number of moves
- Limiting blunders (engine-defined thresholds)
- Progressing through rating brackets
- Competing under varied time controls
- Maintaining winning streaks
The vision is a gamified pathway where each milestone feels like an achievement, guiding players to steadily improve while keeping motivation high.
From a technical perspective, one approach would be to build an external website that tracks progress while the actual games are played on Lichess. However, this would involve back-and-forth between platforms, which could feel awkward. Ideally, this kind of system would be integrated directly into Lichess itself, where the progression data and challenges live alongside the gameplay experience.
I’d be very interested to hear whether the Lichess team or the community sees value in this, and whether it could be considered for future development. A built-in roadmap could be a powerful educational tool and a fun way to engage players of all levels.
