Ding wins 2023 FIDE chess world championship

Over the boardChess
After a long and nail-biting 14 games plus The tiebreaks, Ding Liren, the Chinese superstar narrowly defeats Russian number 1, Ian Nepomniachtchi.

What a match! After the GMs decided to draw the first game, Ian won the second, and then after another draw, Ding won his first game of many. But after yet another loss by Ian in game 5, he didn't let it get to him because he went on to beat him in game 6! Ian wins another, but then games 8,9,10 and 11 were all drawn ever by repetition or by agreement. Ding wins the next game but then something amazing happened. the next 5 games were all drawn. This leads us onto the very last game of the tournament. The tiebreaks. It all came down to this match. Ding Liren of China faces Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia. The game was a typical anti-Marshell Spanish (or Ruy Lopez) and ding was about to repeat moves but realised it was completely winning if he walked himself into a rook fork. This left Ian shaking as he was not expecting it, but Ding went on to become the 17th chess world champion, dethroning Magnus Carlson, the best player in the world!
