The Best Openings in Blitz for a Quick Edge
Now, let’s talk about one of the key aspects of Blitz: openings. In Blitz, time management is crucial, and this is where structured opening systems can make a huge difference. For White, openings like the London System or Larsen’s Opening (1.b3) are excellent choices. Why? Because they allow you to play faster and in a more structured manner. In these systems, the moves are often similar or nearly identical from one game to the next, reducing thinking time and preserving energy for the crucial phases of the game.

Another advantage of these systems is that they allow you to master specific types of positions. Not only do you become familiar with the opening moves, but also with the middle-game plans that follow.
Plus, these systems aren’t just effective in Blitz games—they can work well in classical games too. By mastering something like the London System or Larsen’s Opening, you might even surprise your opponents in longer time controls where deep preparation is often overlooked.
For Black: Embrace the Modern Defense à la GM Simagin
As Black, it can be tough to counter White’s initiative in Blitz games. One intriguing solution is to take inspiration from Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Simagin, known for his bold use of the Modern Defense. By adopting modern systems that initially allow White to advance, while preparing for a long-term counterattack, you can quickly seize the initiative. This approach gives you flexibility, allowing you to adapt to White’s plans while keeping a sharp eye on their weaknesses.
White's move order doesn't really matter now. You'll play knight back to b8, if white plays d5. Otherwhise, you'll play e5 and have an active knight on e5, in case of captures on e5, or on d4.
Usually, white plays with the long-castle.
If it happens, play with c6 and b5. The idea is purely to open up the queenside and attack the white king.
Try to apply these opening setups to your repertoire.
