and Black Queens - that is how we normally stop a variation
Why Material Imbalances in Chess are Trickyand Black Queens - that is how we normally stop a variation
In the above Position, in the game between FM Badacsonyi Stanley and GM Praggnanandhaa R, Pragg played Qa3 and after Bc1 Qc5+ Be3 did not want to to a3 for the 2nd time and played Qb5 which is an equivalent choice and we reach the following position
In the above Position White Played 28.Nxc7 Qc6 29. Nxa6 and played 29... Rb2. The Knight on a6 cannot be captured because of Qxa4
So now the White Queen is under attack
Our Options
- We do not have any counterattack moves like Nb4 or Nb8 possible because the c6 Queen is protected Black simply takes the Queen on c2.
- Queen moving to c1 loses because we do not attack a4 anymore and Black takes our Knight on a6
- So we have to play the intermediary move 30. Rd8+ Kf7 31. Qd1 with an eye on a4 Knight. The Drawback of this move is that we lose control of c3.
But the Advantage of this move is that we get access to d7 square for a possible counter attack
Now White already has tricks like Rd7+ and Queen eyeing to go to g3 via e1 in case Black King goes to g6. We dont calculate K to g8 because Black is Pragg :)
So Black plays Nxc3 and white plays Qd7+ and Pragg decided to go Kg6. Now White found a beautiful move. It doesn't win but it made Pragg think for almost 4.5 minutes because he realised that the position is very critical and Pragg actually went wrong allowing winning chances for White. This article is about those chances
White played h4 here ! White was playing move by move and he has been finding the best moves continuously. The assessment doesn't matter.
The White player has been doing his controllable and put pressure on the Candidate (Almosttt) and Pragg finally erred. The Psychological situation is like Pragg has mind variations between playing objectively and trying to beat the FM rated 400 points below him. Also he realises from his pure chess strength that White has tricks. For example Qxa6 leads to Qe8+ and Mate. So Pragg decided on h5 and I believe he missed the Power of Material Imbalance at the end in his calculation
White continued doing his controllable and played the best move Nc5 and the game continued with Rb1+ , Kh2 Qxd7 , Rxd7 Nd1
Now Where does the Bishop Go ?
Bd4 ? was played in the game and the White player played Bg1 on next turn and lost the game
Bd2 ! is a very practical choice and after c3 Bxc3 Nxc3 and Nxe6 - White retains very good practical chances of Draw
The Solution is actually Bg1 !! The Only variation I will calculate here as a tournament player under time pressure is c3 ! and after Nxe6 c2 Rxg7+ Kh8 - We stop here as and Black Queens
and Black Queens....
Bd4 !! c1 Q and Bxf6 !! White wins by force. Feel Free to Check out the Variations !

Practical Tip :
1) Do not Stop till the forcing moves exhaust. Chess as in Life Keeps Surprising you everyday
2) In Deeper Calculations, you can have an alternate move as the Emergency Exit Option in case you are not able to find a Lift or an Escalator
But once you reach the Current Position on the board , you can use your Emergency Exit Option or you can spend time and find the Lift or the Escalator
3) Many times we have so many worries during a game and want to change things quickly but the best thing that we can do and only thing we can do it doing the controllable which is a highly underrated chess game skill
