Going against misleading ideas

Dismissing prejudgement in bullet

It is commonly said that bullet requires no skiill. That playing it is merely a waste of time for improving your playing skills. I disagree. The quickness and intuition that bullet teaches us is important to grow your game.

Obviously, you are not going to improve significantly by playing bullet, and you should do many other things that will bring much better results (read books, do tactics, play over-the-board games, etc...). But playing bullet is not useless for you, in my opinion.

For example, i have had positions in otb games, in classical, where I had almost no time at all and being able to think quickly helped me (although, sadly, with a couple of mistakes along the way).

Despite the fact that your time is very limited in bullet, you should be able to think of several strategic plans during your games. Obviously, you might(and probably) will make some mistakes when devicing them, but you should have an idea of what position you desire to obtain.

I will show one example that pertains to me. It is an instructive game, I believe.

In this move, I traded the knight in f6 because I knew that my knight would be very strong in d5. If he, eventually, took it with his bishop I would be much better because of my pawn structure being clearly superior.
Then, I played gradual, slow moves to improve my position.

Here, instead of playing g5, I should have made more pacient moves, improving the positions of my king and the h-pawn. Since black's pieces are blocked, I have a lot of time on my hands.

Rook g6 is a mistake, it is unnecessary (although i am much better anyway). He can play simply rook h8, and he will bring the king to help the rook to capture the h-pawn. Of course, I will use my rook to capture his pawns and I will remain with a won position.

But he took it, and I was able to implement my plan. By exchanging rooks, I was able to guarantee the promotion of my pawn with nc7!, which wins the game, of course.

As i said before, having a plan (however flawed, which is rather likely in bullet) is fundamental to improve your bullet skills and your rating. I know that thinking strategically in bullet is hard, but one ought to do that to make some improvements.
