Inside Your Coach's Heart
I have been coaching chess for more than a decade. I have met kinds of personalities, moods, seriousness, and intensities. And yet one thing that has never changed – my passion for coaching chess.
There’s something bizarre about being a chess coach. It is supposed to be a job – your way to earn – but it’s not only that. There must a heart in it. Chess learning is a journey – as well as chess coaching. I will be honest. Sometimes, chess coaching is frustrating and exhausting. Yes, it is! Yet, fulfilling! You may ask any chess coaches (those who want their players to improve) how much emotion they pour into their chosen career.
MORE THAN WHAT WE SHOULD!
During Training
Sometimes, well, most of the time, coaches are pushy with our players as if “chess is life”. The tone, the glare, and the discipline are altogether in one moment. Strict coaching? Or just passionate?
As for me, I don’t want to waste their potential – as well their parents’ money.
The challenging part in the series of training is the differences: playing style, opening choices, and personalities.
One is active.
One is quiet.
One is hyper.
One is... What a variation!
You need to deal, and satisfy the needs of each.
Then, of course, not all the time it's smooth training, frustration will hit you hard. Not because coaches want a perfect training or analysis, but 100% dedication during training. When players lack, coaches see the possible tournament outcome.
In our mind, rivals are training hard, and we should do more.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING, GUYS? LET'S TRAIN MORE!
Coaches are emotional, too
Coaches cry when players lose an important game. Coaches cry, too, when players cry after losing the winning game. Coaches cry because we love this game, and we want to see our players excel.
Coaching is rewarding, too
When our players win. It’s enough reward for all the training, hardship, and time and effort invested for that specific moment.
When totally beginners win their first match – it is more than all the trophies in the tournament.
“We did it, coach!”
What a heart melting simple word.
Tough love, tough training, tough coaching – it is also tough for us being tough.
Yet, I want you to see what's inside your coaches' hearts.
