A sparkling crushing of the Pirc against 2234
There are sunny days, tooHi everyone!
Sparkling? Well, I routinely challenge higher-rated opponents. You can guess why: this is great for one's improvement. Of course, there are more losses than wins, but hey, this is exciting! Sometimes they can comment on my games afterwards or give their opinion, which super helpful.
This time, my opponent played a bit too fast (while I almost lost on time). Their rapid rating is provisional, but I checked and it used to be 2200–2300+, and their blitz is 2100–2300. I analyse this in more depth in the study. Here, we are going to see the key moments.
1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4. f4 Bg7 5. Nf3

The Austrian Attack by White – the most aggressive setup, but also compromising on my own king safety.
5...Nc6 6. Bb5 O-O 7. O-O Bd7 Here, I did not take the opportunity to play an active e5, the main blow in the Austrian Attack.
8. Kh1 a6 9. Bd3 Bg4 10. Be3 e5 11. fxe5 dxe5 12. d5 Nd4

Black is pressing my center and even planted their knight on d4. Looks scary, but frankly, it will not stay there for long.
13. Qe1 Nxf3 14. gxf3 Bh3 15. Rg1
This is one of the points where the engine keeps changing its mind, if left to think for long enough. Stratetically, there is very complex play ahead. The g-file has been opened for the White rooks, but White's king is also compromised. Who knows what will happen?
15...Nh5 16. Ne2 f5 17. Bg5 Bf6 18. Qh4

Bringing more pieces to the kingside. Engine still thinks Black is slightly better here, but then Black must defend perfectly. Right now, about the only good move is 18...Bg4! interfering with White's rook defending the bishop on g5. But who would find that?
18...Bxg5? 19. Rxg5
Now there seems to be too much firepower, as White will double up the rooks on the g-file. Black cannot handle so much pressure, but their next two moves allow to expose their king to too much attack:
19...fxe4 20. Qxh5 exd3 Can you find the winning sacrifice here?

21. Rxg6+! Kh8
If Black takes, then Qxg6+ and I bring my remaining rook to g1, with mate to follow soon.
22. Qxe5+ Rf6 23. Rxf6 Kg8 24. Rg1+ 1-0
Black's king simply got too exposed. But what is remarkable about the Pirc, is the resulting positions are so crazy that the engine keeps changing its evaluation. A good battlefield to outplay your opponents. So ultimately, it's not all up to computers yet – we humans also have our say!
Has this inspired you to play the Pirc – or on the contrary? Please let me know in the comments.
