About me

I'm IM John Bryant from California, USA. I'm 34 years old. I'm happy to help you reach your chess goals!

Playing experience

2012 US Open 1st place, 5-time American Open Champion, 3-time Southern California State Champion, winner of over 100 Open tournaments
I've beaten many notable GMs in classical games including Ray Robson, Varuzhan Akobian, and Jon Ludvig Hammer. I have 3 GM norms.

Teaching experience

I've been teaching chess for over 10 years to students ranging from beginner to master level.

Other experiences

I'm certified to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL).
I taught English for 1 year in Japan.
I have a BS in economics.

Best skills

I have a balanced style of play, although tactics are my strong point. I look at my students' games to identify weaknesses, then I prepare lecture and training material to fix them. I can handle all aspects of training, so the student can spend their time efficiently learning chess instead of having to figure out how to study chess. This includes assigning appropriate homework, comprehensive training plans, and sending annotated opening files with professional level quality for study. My opening expertise for white is 1. e4 openings: Sicilian Alapin, Rossolimo, Scotch, Ruy Lopez, French Tarrasch, 2 Knights Caro Kann. For Black: 1.e4 e5/Berlin Defense, Sicilian Najdorf, King's Indian Defense, Benoni, Queen's Gambit Declined. Each lesson is conducted via Zoom. You can get an idea about my chess style and see how I explain moves from my YouTube videos. You can ask me questions any time outside of class via text messages or e-mail. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about my coaching, please feel free to e-mail me at JohnDanielBryant@gmail.com or text me at (760)338-8672.

Teaching methodology

Generally, my training method is to analyze games, play training games, and go over instructional material.
