About me
I’m Soham Kamotra, a 22-year-old chess player from Jammu & Kashmir, India. I became an International Master last year, securing five norms along the way. I’ve won multiple national titles and earned international medals at major events such as the Asian and Commonwealth championships. Having graduated this year, I’ve chosen to enter the teaching profession with full sincerity, dedication, and a passion for helping others grow in chess.
Playing experience
I have competed in some of the strongest open events the chess world has to offer, securing wins against several strong Grandmasters such as Leon Luke Mendonca, Aleksandr Shimanov, Bai Jinshi, and many more. I have also defeated top players like Levon Aronian and Radosław Wojtaszek in Titled Tuesday events.
Teaching experience
I have trained alongside many prodigies, both talented and hardworking, & this experience has given me a close understanding of what true chess improvement requires. I’ve applied this knowledge to help 2300+ rated players elevate their game. At times, you may feel stagnant, but often the issue lies in specific areas that need to be identified and addressed. A good trainer is your strongest ally in breaking these cycles and unlocking your full potential.
Other experiences
I’m sharing three YouTube videos recorded by ChessBase India so you can see my style of play and understanding of the game firsthand. In the first video, watch me analyze a dynamic, fierce win against a 2300 FM. In the second, a younger version of me breaks down a complex strategic game, navigating a very difficult position back in 2022. Finally, see me explain my win against a 2500-rated prodigy, showcasing computer-like precision in my play.
Best skills
My strength lies in positional and strategic play. Tactics and calculation are the foundation of chess, and with proper training material and steady practice, any player can improve them significantly. But developing strong intuition, the kind that understands structures, plans, and long-term ideas; demands a deeper, more thoughtful study of the game. That level of understanding is what I aim to help my students achieve. Choosing the right openings is another area I can guide you in. Your openings should include the element of surprise while allowing you to feel confident in the resulting early middlegame positions. My preparation will ensure these key aspects are fully covered.
Teaching methodology
First, I review my students’ games from the past six months to identify key weaknesses. We then work on these areas during class and through daily homework I provide. Together, we build a strong, deep opening repertoire, study similar structures, and analyze model games. My approach is holistic: I believe chess improvement should be both effective and enjoyable, and I ensure that every session teaches something new and valuable.
