The FM must have been high on orange juice.

It‘s a strong indicator how unbeknownst the Czech is even among strong players. They see 1...d6, play play their Pirc stuff, however, this ain’t the acid test.

Interesting! It looks like even the caveman 4.Be3 refutes the dreaded Czech.
1.e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 c6 4. Be3 Qb6 5.a3! -> Czech refuted

I see. I guess the FM couldn’t remember the continuation. :D
Well, this ofc is playable. Nothing serious, however I cannot recommend munching the b2^^ Everything included in my courses. The hundred other refutations (when White has a +1 after 4 moves) are conceivable, too.

This reminds me of when I played a relatively unknown opening (the bird) and since my FM opponent clearly didn't know the theory, he got crushed on the kingside with little resistance.

Actually I had this otb on Sunday in my league game. It went on like 5...Ng4 and the Be3 was exchanged - Black was ok. Bc1 or Bg5 are better for White ofc.

Fun fact, I haven‘t been aware of that previously: the game #1 can be found 237x times in the Lichess db actually, 48x Black took on e5. And several players were rated 2800-2900...
