At tournaments I use scoresheets. Along with the moves, sometimes I write the time on each other's clock so I can keep track of which moves I spent the most time on. Sometimes I would also write "K" for "key moment" if I thought that move was a critical move. What would be some other things I could write next to moves to keep track of my thought process?
And is this not even allowed? I heard stuff about how writing your move out in advance is not allowed (I don't do that) and also writing too much extra info on your scoresheet

Ask Wesley So.
I mean, it’s your scoresheet. But if you are in the FIDE-rated sections, you can’t do that, as you have to hand the scoresheet in. But yes, I think it’s allowed to write your move in advance (I don’t do that either, I think it’s weird and wastes your time by 5 seconds lol) and write your thoughts on the scoresheet when not FIDE-rated. I personally don’t write anything on my scoresheets except my moves. And do you happen to be at the World Open right now?

I'm not in FIDE but I didn't know that, so thank you
can write your thoughts on the scoresheet when not FIDE-rated.
Good to know, but I probably wouldn't write exact thoughts in case my opponent could read them. I've got to think of 5 or 6 useful symbols/abbreviations/words I could use
And do you happen to be at the World Open right now?
No but I will be (don't go looking for my name cause it's not actually Jim), good luck if you're there!

Other than the opponents name, probably the date, thats about it.
The moves, i write them down when i remember to do so.

HUGE EXCLAMATION SYMBOL: you cannot write ur next move in scoresheets. It has been used to cheat a lot. The Trainer would look at ur next move and do a sign to say, play or nah

Oh ok. Not that I write my moves before I play.

Assumin FIDE event. You must write your move and you may write clock times. You must not write anything else. You may not write your move before hand UNLESS you are planning to make a move upon which you demand a draw and stop the clock and call arbiter (usually opponent would agree on draw before you finish this operation)
Writing down move before makin it is considered making notes hence is forbidden. USCF seem to allow it which is odd but they are free to do their own rules

I think that there, online chess, like here on lichess, has that advantage over OTB, that it is possible to keep a trace of your thoughts not just the leftover game PGN (which is mainline leftover of your thoughts when completed by opponent own thought process resulting with their move leftover).
In correspondence that is almost completely possible (to be complete is a chore though, lots of retranscriptions before sending a move). I am surprised that, in OTB tournaments (isn't OTB always about tournaments?) you can keep some of that thought process with the "K", but good to know, pleasantly surprised. There is some hope. Although wouldn't you lose time doing that, some kind of overhead self-awareness?
