An inflated sense of self. A poor chess improvement plan. Terrible calculation skills. Lack of middlegame understanding. Poor endgame play.
I know this because I suffer from all chess afflictions.

The average chess player loses in the middle game.
The better chess player loses in the endgame.
Some grandmasters lose in the opening.

Many people have no clue how to study in schools or our of schools.
By the time they learn a method, their foundation is full of holes.
I'm not even convinced that 50% of the members on lichess has even completed the learn section on lichess.
There is no record of how many members have done it or completed it.
It only says 100% when we completed it.
But nobody knows that in the members profile.
Cheaters don't complete it. That's another reason to do them, so you don't look like a cheater.

I'm on 0% completion but after seeing first lesson I was confident I knew how the rooks move and figured it was a tutorial I could skip if I knew how to move pieces...

Although to be fair if you go to practice it does have more advanced themes I never realised was there

average lichess player loses most often by blundering a piece. More likely in middle game as it has more moves that opening. And more pieces to blunder than in the endgame.

it is most often the opening, cause people tend to play 1-2 openings ad infinitum, so if you get paired against one of those, which most of the times is the case, you are going to fall into some popular line you dont know, you fall for some traps and you lose, if you survive the opening the middle game is anyones game, and end game is pretty much a blunderfest anyway
the ones saying the middle game are mistaken, cause most often the middle game loss stems from bad position after opening, if you get an equal opening, middle game is anyones game for average player
