Because in the other 52% Black left the board out of sympathy for the other player.
I would recommend the Panov-Botvinnik attack against 1...c6.
Almost all World Champions have played the CK, even Micha Tal.

I ́d make Levy from GothamChess responsible for the new-found popularity. He loves playing it, he ́s always recommending it, and that must have rubbed off onto a sizeable percentage of his 4.3 million viewers.
Must say I ́m grateful to him, I had finally to get to grips with playing against it as White after it kept popping up so regularly.
I'm not a fan of the Caro. I too wonder why the 4th best move seems to be the 1st most common move I see nowadays. I suppose I will have to blame Levy. Well, at least I can have a good time winning with the advance variation.
