We have a problem here: people complained about having the friends list in the bottom-right corner, and now that it’s in a better spot, it’s the end of the world.

I think there is a better way: remove the icon before username, and use that space to add the friend box. My main issue is that they removed the username which made it easier to click. Now i have to aim at it.
Also the forum looks different and takes a lot of space, like see this:

I don't see anything wrong with the spacing between the username and the comment though. Also, making the comments alternate like that is a nice feature they added.

The OP's complaint is that on their mobile device, it is now harder to open the account menu. Older screens get dead areas on the edges which can make successfully tapping a small target like the account menu harder.
It's not demotivating to receive good feedback like this. Don't attack useful opinions here.

Maybe it's as simple as making the account icon larger when the username is elided.
