There are a lot of bands that are well known for their hit songs, but when you start digging deeper into their catalogue, some of their deep cuts sound nothing like the style they are famous for. For example, here is 'Effigy' by CCR. It sounds nothing like a typical CCR song.

I noticed some good tracks recently by rock bands deeper on their albums where they steered away from commercial sounds they're known for.
I'll try to find them in my Pandora.

One was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, he went prog and it was good too.

Maybe not exactly a deep cut as it's a well-known song but when The Beatles almost went Heavy Metal in 1968 (!) with Helter Skelter, wow. The White Album is so incredibly diverse stylistically, it all sounds like them and at the same time, it doesn't. I mean, you've got a song like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da on the same album, it's crazy!

"Play with Fire" by the Rolling Stones comes to mind, one of their early pieces: Social criticism expressed in a dark and malicious tone. The music is calm but also eerie, more sprechgesang and chamber music than loud rock like "Paint It Black" (which was released just one year later and is far better known).

If I had heard this long ago, I would have preferred it over most of his hits. Something big.
Dang lesson in songwriting this one is.

Kenny Rogers' song... Just Dropped In ( To See What My Condition Was In' ) , was a noticeable change of genre song. You half to wonder, about what was going on, when that song was written?! The song was very popular, and made the Top/Pop 40 songs list. I liked it! -:]

Written by Mickey Newbury, one of the original cowboy-hippies. First recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis in May 1967. The song came out on one of Jerry's albums in November 1967. Kenny Rogers' single was released in January 1968.
The tradition continues! A 2022 live cover by Jamey Johnson!

By the way, The Big Lebowski soundtrack is pretty darn good!

Yeah, Jamey looks like he could be running a still in West Virginia. I think he used to write most of his songs, but I heard him say that he hasn't been writing many songs in the last few years. I kept hearing this song on the radio about "between Jennings and Jones", but I didn't know who was singing it. Turns out it was Jamey.
