That huge colorful spinner next to a beautiful is just too darn distracting.

As John Lydgate said, "You can satisfy some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot satisfy all of the people all the time"

I like the change.

I believe the intention was to fixate user attention on the spinner - green - blue - yellow - red ......and ignore board, quote and rest of relevant stuff on UI......hmmm

I can't fathom being so upset over such a slight change and overall meaningless aspect of a website that I would complain about it to others. Feel you no shame?

Here's a little check list I use to identify people online who are just trying to get a reaction out of you AKA "trolls," You guys should save this for later use. It's saved me all kinds of time.

Troll check list
=======================

  • Borderline incoherent because of spelling/grammar mistakes: YES
  • Passionately complaining about trivial things, check: YES
  • Threats to "leave forever" : YES
  • Attacks first person who disagrees by name: YES
  • Pulls adjectives at random from a Thesaurus: YES

It's so obvious he may even be a bot actually.

I don't even think they're trolls. As thibault pointed out, this happens after pretty much every change, no matter how large or small.

It's natural to be upset when conditions attached to one's habits are removed or altered. Shakes people into consciousness and out of their comfort zone, that's all.

I find those colourful loading spinners being distracting. They draw users' attention and give an impression of slow loading. Right now I really think lichess has become very very slow.
I sincerely believe Thibault knows what he is doing, but spinners aren't friendly to users, unless you really plan to add more colour to the interface (which is probably not so good idea).
