This is a bug that comes and goes and has been there for at least a year. At least in Safari on Mac OS. Sometimes, only some pieces are missing (e.g. the knights), sometimes only the pieces of one color. You should exit lichess completely in all browser instances, clear cache and local data and with some luck, the pieces are back when you restart your browser and the lichess page. Tough luck though in a bullet game. I remember a game against a GM where I couldn't see my knights, even though I could move them. So I had to swap them off quite fast to get a regular game.

Switching to a different piece set might also work. Click your name in the upper right, Piece set.

Just guessing. Never had this bug myself. Probably a combination of a browser bug and transmission failure.
