This comment needs it's own thread! I had a bad case of waking chessbrain after a recent defeat against an IM, and the board kept invading my brain for hours after, totally spoiling the movie I watched to get me over the defeat!

Chess can be cruel even to great exponents of the game.
For example, after establishing a winning position with 44 accurate moves, player Z overlooks something on the 45th. This allows opponent W not only to take away the hard earned advantage but to create a short forcing sequence that wins crucial material or leads to mate.
The fact that Z was better for the majority of the game has no impact on the score ~ it just goes down as 0 - 1.
