What a Figure Skater Can Teach You About Chess Improvement

@MattyDPerrine Thank you for posting this. I have a lot of work to do, but at least I feel I CAN now do some of that work. I have wanted to make some progress for months, but I was too afraid of losing points. My rating in real life is below 1100 USCF, which does not seem good, especially for someone my age. However, it is where I am and I need to visit the chess club more frequently if I want to improve. One of the things that haunts me is that I was once 1328 USCF, which is still not great. I need to find a way to let go. I really shouldn't care about my rating while I am still at my current level. I also lost sight of the fun I used to have. I could be the worst player in the world and still enjoy playing chess. I need to learn to study exercises without beating myself up for getting some of the answers wrong. It's getting a little better...

Thanks for this truly outstanding blog!

I recognized myself in many passages, and while reading, I felt like you were holding a mirror up to my face.

Many chess players can benefit from the mental attitude that the young Alysa Liu displays in her competitions when they try to reflect on their own approach to chess.
