For your second question, I think not. Except perhaps in Japan or Korea, in moderate amounts. But definitely nothing approaching the universality of English. In fact English is probably more universal than Chinese in Asia.

@Dr_Disconnector
What is the recipe for bao?

I'm not sure though but here is the recipe for a bao bun

  • 25 g all-purpose flour (about 2 tbsp)
  • 1⁄8 tsp instant yeast (a pinch)
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp neutral oil (like canola)
  • 12 ml warm water (about 2½ tsp)
