What is the stupidest rule in chess?

I think that stalemate = a draw, not a win, is an unpleasant surprise for many beginners. This rule has existed for over 500 years and maintains a balance between attack and defense. "Stupid" moments arise when the winning side makes mistakes; proper endgame technique prevents them. Masters deliberately use stalemate as a resource for stealing half-points and defeating their opponents.

premoves are terrible and encourage the avoidance of tactics in favor of competing for timeouts

Possibly Nokia gambit. It never happened to me because before exams I was always paranoid as hell and for chess I play otb only purely friendly casual, about five games in the recent 15 years.

(@)Sonya_Alushkina: Based on your post, I am not sure if you think that stalemate is stupid or not.

(@)Tlilchantli: Premoves add a unique layer to online Chess. Without it, Ultrabullet and Bullet would suffer and lose some of their identity; Ultrabullet would probably be unplayable. 'Is it risky to premove here?' 'Will my opponent premove now?' 'Should I premove less?'

The stupidest rule in chess is castling . It should not exist.

You sound like a person who has had their attacks on their opponent's king foiled by castling.

@IamNOTamod First of all it is stupid and forced. Without it playing is super hard. In some siciliian line i could go Kd2 Kc2 Kb1which costs me just one more move of manual castling instead of the usual 3. But no one plays najdorf nowadays

It is not stupid, it increases the number of options.

And no one "forces" you to castle, either.

Increases the number of options. What?????
Also it IS FORCED because without that YOU are MUCH worse just because YOUR opponent can castle.
