I've been worrying that I spend too much time on chess between books and 3x per week clubs. But every time I go, I have lots of fun.

If you enjoy it, don’t stop. Just don’t let it dominate your time at the expense of enjoying life in other ways.

Why do you have to be such a killjoy? Who made you the arbiter of life?

@Firegoat7 What are you going on about? I told ('suggested' may be a better word) him to enjoy himself but to not let one thing dominate his life at the expense of other things. My post is only 25 words long, it's hardly an essay so perhaps you could re-read it when you have a spare hour or two.
I'll presume, even if its dangerous to do so, you do know what a 'killjoy' is?
Using words like 'arbiter' does not not make your post any more credible.
At the risk of being a killjoy, i'll bid you farewell and hope that you 'Have a nice day'.

Awesome! I don't really know if I'll have the time but I'm considering going to our local club sometime too. I'm still really new and kind of hope some good players there would be able to help me improve.

Yeah, I should go to my local club

I invited my friend to the club. I taught him a ladder mate with queen and rook, though he still needs help there. He beat a 400 rated bot. I played king, knight, and 6 pawns vs same with him, 3 wins in a game where I replayed other than the winning move. Had him record all the moves. Also did knight drills with him. I have him 3 good beginner books, and he is doing tactics puzzles, clicking show solution and going through it.
Not bad for 3 weeks of knowing the rules.
I need to get in my own games though. I missed my chance to play someone 2100 rated. We exchanged lichess usernames though, since he is not always there.
Never know when or if the strong players will arrive. If I wait, they might not show. If I start a game with someone, they might show up and play with someone else the whole time.
Next time I want someone else to play my friend with queen odds. They all want to play me since I've won every game except against the organizer and his student, whom I drew against.

What does it matter to you what a stranger does with their life? It is not your life. If they want to spend every hour of it playing chess so what? They don't need your permission to make their choices in life. It is this "normal", "balanced" viewpoint of life, itself nothing more then a personal confirmation bias that represses other people into conformity. Mediocre effort gets mediocre results.

I started going to a club recently and felt very welcome, made many new chess friends, and had a lot of fun, so recently I joined. Its really nice playing people OTB and having a drink and a laugh about the games or even talking about something completely different afterwards. I think that is the point: chess can connect people, and if anything OTB adds a dimension to your life - I don't think there's any danger that it will imbalance your life. On the contrary! It opens up opportunities.

Anxiety made me miss a club meeting last week. Almost made me not float the river today. But I floated down the river by pressure of my friend who wanted to know whether I'd come buy the air mattress at the stated time. I'm so glad I did. I had a blast. I'm looking forward to the next chess meet-up too.
