Updates

Hey guys,

I'm grateful for all the positive comments I've received concerning this event. (You're also free to send me negative comments if you feel that there needs to be some yin and yang, you know :P?)

Some updates:

  1. I'm probably going to increase the prize pool to $400. I hope other sponsors help me out in increasing it further.

  2. The format will most almost assuredly be a knockout format. This is what the atomic WC is doing, and it seems to be working quite well. Maybe even a Candidates and a final WC battle might be in order...Other than those two formats, though, I don't quite like other types of formats.

  3. I will be throwing in "random" prizes. This is to encourage the participation of "the non-contenders." I'm thinking of adding prizes for the following (BTW most of these criteria are subjective. I think that's fine with most people, right? I'm not a biased person at all, but I am human...so, I might make a bad pick, but I'm happy to change my mind if I get a reasonable enough objection):

a) Best sportsmanship
b) Best game of the week
c) Biggest upset
d) Random prize (probably dependent on end of tournament rank. i. e.: The 35th finisher gets a prize)
etc. (Any more?)

  1. When all interested players have joined this group, I'll open up a poll concerning the time control of this event. For now, I encourage forum discussion on this topic. I made a thread just for that:

Enjoy :)

  1. BrzopotezniMangup96 said the following, "...or even some predictions of the winner in some knockouts." I really like this idea and am thinking that we could, during the tournament, have something like a discussion board where people predict the winner of each stage and get prizes for it. That sounds like fun!

What about the best move guess prize for audience? or best move brilliancy prize for players? I heard something like that from Daniel Rensch when Magnus faced Hikaru.
Sportsmanship prize is a bit difficult to decide because everybody here playes fair and most of the players are pretty polite in chat, I mean you can't really cheat or be impolite (because you will get banned :))
And as far as the betting is concerned I thought that all of the players should guess the winner of each match and the score, and then in the end to calculate who was the most accurate in predictions. We could do something similar with audience but with the points system. Each spectator starts with certain amount of betting points and then you place a bet. At the end the spectator with the highest number of betting points wins the prize. I suggested something simipar for lichessTV but it was never considered deeply :(

@ #1 you suggestion a randomprize i had a idea if someone have 5pawns or 6 on 1 file and win his/her game he or she can win a small random price. only on person can win that price the first one who send you his/her games with 5/6 pawns on one file

@BrzopotezniMangup96

I like both ideas. I'll add them. Thanks!

Yeah I might scrap the sportsmanship thing. I just thought of this because there was a certain member on chess.com who showed like really excellent sportsmanship and they allowed him to play Magnus in a simul because of it.

Yes yes, that sounds good. What's the difference between having the players or the spectators themselves bet, though?

@IM opperwezen Hehehe, cute idea, but don't you think that someone might just start to, on purpose, munch on his opponent's pawns and place them on one file? How would we fix such a loophole?

Hey Fischy my friend,
I would suggest you to make a lot of small prizes (not a lot of money), but in the way that they are reachable for almost every competitor in the championship. Here are some more suggestions:
Longest winning strike
Quickest win in terms of moves played not time, but without resignation (must be a checkmate). I think this would stimulate players to remain focused and precise even in a clearly winning position in order to find the quckest way to a victory.
Longest games played on tournament in terms of moves played overall. I mean how many moves each player played per game on average. I think this prize would be really fun and it will also stimulate player to keep on fighting even in lost positions which will prolong games.
Will put some more suggestions if a remember, I seem to get really active here :)

@IM penguingim1 Thanks for vouching for me :). Just to correct you: Imortal is a brilliant piece of programming by a Filipino programmer named Ferdinand Mosca.

@BrzopotezniMangup96 :)

Yes, a lot of small prizes is what I'm aiming for.

So far we have:

a) Best game of the week
b) Biggest upset
c) Random prize (probably dependent on end of tournament rank. i. e.: The 35th finisher gets a prize)
d) Best move brilliancy prize for players
e) Betting on who will win
f) Best move guess prize for spectators
g) Longest winning streak
h) Quickest checkmate in terms of moves (or checkmating sequence because players might resign before it's checkmate)

I don't know about the longest game on average thing...I don't want people to needlessly prolong their games.

Hehehehe, I'm glad you're so active here :).

@FischyVishy hmm maybe thats was not a good idea from me
the ideas you suggest are good. to get 5pawns in a normal game is really hard but possible i had a game with 5pawns on a real game once https://nl.lichess.org/eHXtlIuvf2Xu

Hehehhe...NP, opperwezen. It was a really good idea had it not been for this loophole. Really cool game, LOL. I have a funny Wall of China game, but it's not a good game :P. Not to get sidetracked, but do you have any Wall of China games?
