How my club accidentially won promotion in our chess league

@TeoKajLibroj in your game against Alvis, on move 17 you mentioned how Ne5 is a better option. To your surprise, it won on the spot. After Ne5 black can only play Qe8 and after Qxe8 Kxe8 Bxe7 Kxe7 Ng6+ you have an easier win

Ps: engine suggests Ne5 Qe8 bxc6!! With black getting bulldozed. Its +5

@Himawari_Nohara You're right. It seems wild to play a pawn move in such a crucial moment when the Queens are facing each other, but the engine sees that Black's Rook is trapped behind the King so it's willing to keep the tension. I don't think I'd be able to stay so calm in such a position myself!

Game two does not technically contain a queen sacrifice. Congratulations on the promotion though!

Think of it more like this: Black can't play QxQ due to the knight fork, and he can't do Kg8 unpinning since you force another knight fork then. Thus all he really can do is passive defense, and there's no tactical refutation of that right away. You need to bring in reinforcements to deal a winning blow, suggesting two plans:

  1. The rook lift Rf1-e1-g3/f3 breaking through on the kingside.
  2. bxc6 followed by Ra1-b1-b7 breaking through on the queenside - or simply followed by Nd7+,Nf6+ and NxQ.

The point of bxc6 isn't the pawn itself, but the gained control of d7 and the opening of the b-file. Opening a second front a point where he can just barely defend the current one.
