This article is interesting. On a side note, I think what is needed for 960 arena tournaments is an increase in the time to observe the position. I think the standard is 25 seconds, which is too short in my view. 1 minute seems more reasonable

I suggest shortening the placement stage, at the same time giving black more chances to equalize the game.

  1. Black puts his bishop (8 options) and white's bishop symmetrically.
  2. White places his bishop on a field of a different color (4 options) and black's bishop symmetrically.
    Black places his knight (6 options) and white's knight symmetrically.
  3. White puts his knight (5 options) and black's knight symmetrically.
    Black places his queen (4 options) and white's queen symmetrically.
  4. The kings are placed between the rooks (1 option), White makes a move.

This is not an improvement, it would dramatically increase the time of games to place the pieces. Not to mention we have seen from 960 it is already incredibly difficult and unclear in terms of how to play an initial position even if a starting position could be studied for 10 years. It will not be clear that giving ppl the option to place the initial pieces would result in a better position for them. In top level events, which are fairly numerous now, the top players are consistently wrong in terms of thinking a starting position is very good vs. just equal for white once they are able to see computer evaluations after the game.
