Road to NM: Week 1 — Fixing My Opening Repertoire

@tpr said ^

Rapid will not help you become a NM.

Oh. I guess that settles the matter then.
:\

By the way, why NM, and not CM or FM?

Simple. You have to be NM before you are a CM. Your recommendation to skip ahead is fruitless.

As for your repertoire:

It is bad form to link a promotional blog on someone else's comment section.

I am doing multiple things along with playing rapid to try to improve, do you have a better suggestion as to what to play to improve?

By the way, why NM, and not CM or FM?

I'm merely choosing to aim for NM first, as it is less difficult to achieve than other titles in common experience, (still very difficult) and being unable to drive currently there is a lot more opportunity for me to play in tournaments if i aim for NM for the time being.

I never said openings were my problem, and I plan to do very little if any opening study once i finish up fixing my clear weaknesses in these parts of the opening, I've been completely lost in 9 or 10 moves twice this week, and one of them was OTB, so I need to fix those slight gaps and then I will focus on other things.

"do you have a better suggestion as to what to play to improve?"

  • Play classical if you can. To become NM or CM you have to play classical over the board.
    That requires both deeper thought and longer sustained concentration.
    Analysis of your own lost games, or annotated grandmaster games is better too.
    Fischer did not play in 1969, but analyzed 'My Sixty Memorable Games'. He came back stronger than ever before in 1970.
