Epic Endgame: Win with a Passed Pawn

It is an instructive endgame and it is peculiar that endgame virtuoso Capablanca lost this game and the match.
The mechanism to win this endgame only works because of the distance between the a-pawn and the fgh-pawns: with e.g. a c-pawn it no longer works.
The losing move seems 26...Nc4? You say 26...Nd3 was hard to find, but it was easy to see that after 26...Nc4? 27 Rc1 black is in trouble. So 26...Nd3 could be found by elimination.
Alékhine gives 38 Qc7 an !, but 38 Qa1 was simpler to reach the won rook ending.
Alékhine gives 38...Qa6 as obviously the only move, but the more active 38...Qf5 may resist more.
