I think it also makes sense to just briefly check what my opponents plays with the same colour. Especially if I'm playing with black. This way for example if it turns out that my opponent always plays lets say Alekhine with black, then most likely I won't try it against him since probably he is very familiar with the type of positions which arise so I pick something else. Of course if I have a rather narrow repertoire then picking something else in not always an option but at least I would be aware that maybe he knows stuff pretty well.
