It seems 37...Rb5? is the decisive mistake and 37...Nb4 holds the draw.
39...Bd7 better late than never, but in this case never were better: 39...Nb4 was still possible. Bc8 guards square d7 against white's rook, while on d7 the bishop hangs and Nd5 cannot play.
