Halloween Gambit LINES.
God there are so many weird ways people respond to the halloween gambit.Okay so this is a continuation from my other blog post introducing the halloween gambit. I showed some lines and showed the main line, but there are so many weird ways people respond to the halloween gambit that I have to cover them. Also I've just been losing games lately because people are scared and making move that aren't the best, and idk how to play it, so...
In case you didn't read the last blog the halloween gambit is the four knights but you sacrifice the knight for the e5 pawn, and then bully the knights with your pawns.
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5. d4
So it obviously shows the main move, where if they play 5... Ng6 then you're kinda cooked. But those aren't what we're looking at. We're looking at the other weird moves people play!
okay but seriously who looks at that position like "Yeah I'll just play h6 or g6"??
First we'll be looking at 5... Bb4? which loses quickly, but it's not immediately apparent why. 6. dxe5 and here they can play a few moves.
6... Nxe4 best, 7. Qg4 d5 best but I mean c'mon is anyone playing that?? 7... Bxc3+? 8. bxc5 Nxc3 9. Qxg7! Qe2 wdym that's best?? No one is playing that gang. 9... Rf8 10. Bg5 and you should be crushing.
You will be playing Qg4 a lot after 6. dxe5.
5. Neg4
I mean you just play 6. e5 and you should be good lol.
6... Be7 7. h3
6... Bb4 7. exf6 Bxc3+ 8. bxc3
6... Qe6 7. Bb5 Okay. What in the g1 knight is this crap. Why are we moving our bishop to b5. 7... c6 8. O-O BRO WHAT 8... d5 (8... cxb5? 9. exf5 Qxf6 10. Re1+ Be7 (King takes is actually slightly worse for black?) 11. Qxg4 and you should win apparently.) 9. exf6 the best move isn't even to take the pawn lol, it's 9... Qd6, but is literally anyone gonna play that? 10. Re1+ Be7 11. f3 Be6!? 12. fxg4 +-
4. Nxe5 Be4
This one actually has the lowest win rate for white at 47% which is absolutely crazy because THIS MOVE ACTUALLY SUCKS!
I'm sure half the time, this move is played because they premoved their bishop, not expecting their opponent to play such a surprising move. 5. Nxc6 dxc6 you're at a +2 advantage
Okay I'm looking at this win rate and this isn't okay. 41% out of 3.8M people?? That's actually crazy. If only they knew...
... that the best move was 6. h3.
I'm serious! I think stockfish is on something bro wtf is h3 why would you do that, that breaks the principle and purpose of the halloween gambit bro that's sad.
Oh wait it's supposed to prevent 6... Ng4 crap. Sneaky counterattack. But it feels so empty... Like you're up a pawn, sure, and there's a +1.5 advantage, but I mean the whole purpose of the gambit is to be aggressive. Not to just slowly develop your pieces again after 6... Be6 7. d3 bro like look at that. Boring chess. No one ever said a positional chess playstyle is peak.
"Positional chess is a, if not the, peak, defining, and essential style of high-level chess, focusing on long-term strategy, piece coordination, and subtle, incremental advantages." -Gemini
Okay stfu gemini you're telling me this...
Is more entertaining than this?
Because no, it's not!
Besides, the halloween gambit is not a high level chess opening. It's mostly for like mid level bullet or something, because no one's gonna take the knight in top level bullet. Heck, most high level bullet chess players don't even play the four knights very often!!
6... Nxe6
7. Nxe4 Qe7 8. Bd3 f5 9. O-O fxe4 10. Re1 Ne5 11. Rxe4
5. d4 Nc6 6. d5 Ne5 7. f4 Ng6 8. e5 Qe7 9. Qe2 d6 10. exf6 Qxe2+ 11. Bxe2 gxf6 12. O-O This line might actually occur in your game. 12... Ne7 13. a4 Okay maybe not this part ;-;
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5. d4 d5
6. dxe5
6. exd5? This is a move that very quickly loses to 6... Ng6. What?? 7. h4!? Bd6 8. Bb5 Kf8!? (8... Bd7?! 9. h5 but you're still losing.) Yeah, I don't want to go any more in depth in this line. This is ridiculous.
6. d5 Nxe4? 7. Nxe4 Qe7 8. Bd3 f5 9. O-O fxe4 10. Re1 Ne5 11. Rxe4 d4 And you're slightly winning.
6... Bb4 7. dxc6
Black can play a few moves here.
7... Bxc3?! 8. bxc3 Nxe4 9. Bd3 here they can play even MORE moves!
9... Nc5 10. Qe2+ AGH THEY CAN PLAY EVEN MORE MOVES!!
Actually, I just realized 10. Qe2 has only been reached 3 times and black won 2 times, so I don't think there's any point in going over this line.
Most people who reach 9. Bd3 agree to just Nxc3? because I mean cmon it's a hanging pawn, but it's not that good, because 10. Qh5 dxc6 11. O-O Be6 and you're winning.
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5. d4 Ng6 6. e5 Qe7 7. Be2 Ng8 this is a winning line.
Okay I've already spent like 2 hours making this blog (ikr) and if anyone is even reading to this point, congrats and thank you. If you have a line you want me to go over then please reach out to me I'm here every weekend and Friday.
Also this is the mf PGN I used while making ts 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5. d4 Neg4 (5... Bb4 6. dxe5 Nxe4 (6... Ng8) 7. Qg4 Bxc3+ 8. bxc3 Nxc3 9. Qxg7 Rf8) (5... Nc6 6. d5 Nxe4 (6... Ne5 7. f4 Ng6 8. e5 Qe7 9. Qe2 d6 10. exf6 Qxe2+ 11. Bxe2 gxf6 12. O-O) (6... Bb4 7. dxc6 Bxc3+ 8. bxc3 Nxe4 9. Bd3 Nc5 (9... Nxc3 10. Qh5) 10. Qe2+ Qe7) 7. Nxe4 Qe7 8. Bd3 f5 9. O-O fxe4 10. Re1 Ne5 11. Rxe4 d6) (5... d5 6. dxe5 (6. exd5 Ng6 7. h4 Bd6 8. Bb5+ Kf8 (8... Bd7 9. h5 Ne7 10. h6))) (5... Ng6 6. e5 Qe7 7. Be2 Ng8) 6. e5 Qe7 (6... Be7 7. h3) (6... Bb4 7. exf6 Bxc3+ 8. bxc3) 7. Bb5 c6 8. O-O cxb5 (8... d5 9. exf6 Nxf6 (9... Qxf6 10. Re1+ Be7 11. f3 Be6)) 9. exf6 Qxf6 10. Qxg4 (10. Re1+ Be7 11. Qxg4)
