Petrosian vs Spassky || World championship 1966 - Round 10

Hi all

This is one of my all time favorite Tigran Petrosian games and shows how Petrosian is sometimes a lurking tiger ready to pounce, especially when the opponent overextends themselves to try and attack Petrosian leaving a vacuum of weaknesses behind.

Key takeaway points

  • Attacking Chess is nice, but nicer if you don't weaken your own King in the process
  • When playing against Quiet but very strong tactical players, it is especially important to maintain one's own King safety
  • Sacrificing the exchange can be a very powerful tool to neutralise the opponent's attack and hijack key diagonals as in this game
  • The calculating monster of Petrosian is demonstrated with the beautiful Queen sacrifice
  • No wonder Petrosian started off with a 2-0 score vs Garry Kasparov!
