I currently support Chess.com with a premium membership because of their game review feature
This. Seriously, the Lichess devs really need to pay attention. There is a huge market out there of potential new users whose only tie to chesscom is the game review. I know it won't be easy to develop, but it'll be worth it if done properly.

I would be highly interested if the organisation were to bring merchandise back for users to buy and show their support - I would be proud to show off the spirit of this excellent website + the dedication of the entire team to make chess accessible to all.

I understand the intent to do something nice.
If someone had asked you before this was done, "Does this not expose information that should be private," you might have said,"Yeah, it is a bad idea, let's not do it." Now that it's been done, you may search for some justification, such as "Well they can choose any unlocked color to deceive whoever is looking at the icon," without considering the disadvantages of that.

Even though I have not yet donated I love this idea! Looks really cool and feels like a small little incentive for people to donate.
I still got one little addition: Maybe those colors should be mentioned on the "DONATE" page?
