I quite disagree with all the points on status. Your personal status is different than what other people think your status and honestly, you shouldnt even care abt what other people think of you. It depends on you as a person, if your having fun, doing something for example chess coaching because you have a passion for it, screw what others think of you and focus on yourself
"Not changing anyone's life?" Are you serious?
Since it's a coach-atlete bond it will develop discipline.
It's like saying "hey, studying math at school is useless". It may be true since almost nobody gets to use all that math in his life, but if you know how to teach then you'll teach the discipline to get motivated and keep going. And this is a very useful tool for everydays life!
coach word from sport.
not from education or psychology. I think tutor I guess more than moral support. or glorious chess to be star of the podium infrastructure provider.
my bad.
You've measured everything to a tee, but your passion. Passion will change the life, and life can change the passion. Passion is contagious. I know garbage men that are well aware that they stink but love what they do and that right there, a mundane statistic could never equate to. Perhaps you should switch the role and become student for a while.
@nikhildixit how much are u able to earn monthly?
"Even if you are earning 2-4x than a normal day job, people will give more priority and importance to someone who is doing a traditional 9-5 job."
What a horrible thing to say. As if importance is measured by your earnings. What is important is what you contribute to the world. I had a very 'important' job and earned a lot. But it was like most jobs in the world a BS job. It only contributed to more consumerism. Today I earn about 10% what I did before, but a least I make a difference in a positive way.

I am not sure that the author is necessarily promoting that view. It might be that other people in that cultural context actually think that way, or that it is expected as common sense. I did not read it as an apology of that thinking, but rather a sharing of constraint. Whether one can think otherwise might depend on where one is and the expectations for the future, and social acceptance through that. I don't know. I would agree, it is a sad thing.
Maybe you can consider moving to another country if chess coaches in India arent viewed as good status (I doubt that, you are maybe surrounded by idiots). You can earn pretty decent living in west europe with chess coaching and playing high leagues since you are FM....
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
